Man tried jumping onto moving vehicles on I-77 and attacked deputies, SC sheriff says

A man was taken into custody Tuesday after he threw things, including himself, at moving vehicles on Interstate 77 before attacking deputies, according to the Fairfield County Sheriff’s Office.

Despite being arrested, the man has not been identified, the sheriff’s office said Wednesday in a news release.

The incident happened during the evening commute, according to the release.

At about 5 p.m. Tuesday, deputies responded to a hazardous situation on I-77 that involved the unidentified male pedestrian who was reportedly endangering drivers and himself, the sheriff’s office said.

According to reports, the man was throwing objects into northbound lanes of I-77 near the 46 mile marker, according to the release. That’s in the Winnsboro area, near the junction with Camp Welfare Road.

Deputies located the man, who refused offers of assistance and continued walking along I-77, the sheriff’s office said. The situation escalated when the man ran into traffic, attempted to jump onto a moving vehicle, and then entered the bed of a pickup truck before exiting and running away, according to the release.

Deputies caught up with the man who resisted arrest and engaged the law enforcement officers in a physical altercation, resulting in injuries to one deputy, the sheriff’s office said. A Taser was used to subdue the man, and both he and the injured deputy were taken to medical facilities, according to the release.

Further information on their conditions was not available, but the man was given medical clearance before he was taken to the Fairfield County Detention Center, the sheriff’s office said. When he’s identified, the man is expected to be charged with resisting arrest (with violence) and pedestrian on freeways, according to the release. More charges are possible, said the sheriff’s office, which is continuing to investigate the incident.
