Teen killed in shooting involving SC deputy at traffic stop, coroner says
A South Carolina teenager was killed Tuesday in a shooting that involved a sheriff’s deputy, according to the Berkeley County Coroner’s Office.
Tyren J. Kinloch, a 17-year-old Wando resident, is the shooting victim who died, Coroner Darnell Hartwell said Wednesday.
The Berkeley County Sheriff’s Office said no deputies were hurt, and no other injuries were reported.
Kinloch was shot during a traffic stop Tuesday, according to the sheriff’s office. Deputies were conducting an investigation that led to the traffic stop near the intersection of Clements Ferry Road and Rivers Reach Drive, the sheriff’s office said. That’s in the Wando area, about 20 miles from downtown Charleston.
During a Tuesday night news conference, Berkeley County Sheriff Duane Lewis said deputies were “investigating a rash of violent crimes in the area (including) shooting into the dwellings. That’s what led to this confrontation,” according to the Daniel Island News.
During the course of the traffic stop, shots were fired, according to the sheriff’s office. It was not clear if one deputy, or more, fired service weapons, or if anyone else involved in the incident had a gun or fired any shots.
The teen was brought to an area hospital with what Hartwell called “fatal injuries,” and the coroner said his office was contacted by hospital officials at about 10:20 p.m.
Hartwell said that an autopsy will be scheduled, as required by South Carolina law.
Sheriff Duane Lewis asked the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division to lead an investigation into the fatal shooting. The coroner’s office also is continuing to investigate Kinloch’s death, along with SLED.
Both Berkeley County EMS and the City of Charleston Police also responded to the shooting.
