Man killed at student apartment complex in Columbia identified by SC coroner
A man was killed Saturday in a shooting at an apartment complex in Columbia, according to the Richland County Sheriff’s Department.
Damajne Hicks, a 25-year-old Columbia resident, was identified as the shooting victim, Richland County Coroner Naida Rutherford said Tuesday in a news release.
At about 6 a.m., deputies responded to a call about a shooting in the 1000 block of Southern Drive, the sheriff’s department told The State on Sunday. That’s the Redpoint Columbia apartments, a complex that is marketed for students in the area near the University of South Carolina campus.
The apartment complex is in the area between Shop Road and Bluff Road, about 2 miles from Williams-Brice Stadium.
Deputies found an adult inside of an apartment building, and the man had been shot multiple times, according to the sheriff’s department.
EMS was called and both those emergency responders and deputies attempted to save the man’s life, but he died at the scene, the sheriff’s department said.
The Richland County Coroner’s Office was also called to the apartment complex.
No other injuries were reported.
There was no word about a shooter or shooters, or anyone else involved in the gunfire. Information about a possible motive for the shooting was not available.
No arrests have been reported, but the shooting continues to be investigated by the sheriff’s department.
