Teen didn’t like it when mom was insulted, SC cops say. This is why he’s in jail

A teenager was charged with multiple crimes, including attempted murder, following a recent shooting at a South Carolina gas station, according to the Richland County Sheriff’s Department.

Seventeen-year-old Timothy Harley was arrested following a May 30 shooting at the BP gas station/convenience store at 8000 Garners Ferry Road, the sheriff’s department said Monday in a news release. That’s in Columbia, near Exit 9 on Interstate 77.

At about 6 p.m. on May 30, deputies responded to a report of gunfire at the gas station and found an adult who had been shot multiple times in the lower body, according to the release.

EMS took the victim to an area hospital, the sheriff’s department said. Further information on the victim’s condition was not available.

Deputies learned that Harley was at the gas station with multiple family members when a verbal altercation occurred between the victim and Harley’s mother, according to the release. During the argument Harley got a gun from his vehicle and fired multiple rounds into the gas station, then he and his family members left before law enforcement officers arrived, the sheriff’s department said.

No other injuries were reported.

Shortly after the shooting Harley’s mother called law enforcement, saying that her son was the shooting suspect and that he was with her, according to the release. Deputies responded to Harley’s location and he was taken into custody that same night, the sheriff’s department said.

Harley was charged as an adult and the 17-year-old was booked into the Alvin S. Glenn Detention Center, according to the sheriff’s department.

In addition to attempted murder, the teen was charged with two counts of breach of peace of a high and aggravated nature along with single counts of unlawful carry as well as possession of a weapon during a violent crime, jail records show.

Harley’s bond was denied and he remains behind bars, according to jail records.
