Man broke into home & found hiding between mattress and box spring, SC cops say

Three people were arrested over the weekend on charges that they broke into a South Carolina home, where one of them was found hiding from law enforcement officers, according to the Kershaw County Sheriff’s Office.

At about 11 p.m. Saturday, deputies responded to report of a burglary at a home in the 1900 block of Kershaw Highway in Camden, the sheriff’s office said in a news release.

At the home, deputies saw a woman coming out of the front door with items in her hand with a man behind her, according to the release. While the man went back inside the home the woman was taken into custody without incident, the sheriff’s office said.

Deputies surrounded the home and called out to the man, according to the release. After sometime, the man surrendered to law enforcement officers without incident, the sheriff’s office said.

It was around that time that deputies learned a third person may be still inside the home, according to the release.

After several call outs, it was decided to release a police dog to conduct a search and possibly locate a third person, the sheriff’s office said. K9 Sam was sent into the home where he located a man who had hidden himself in between a mattress and a box spring in a second story bedroom, according to the release.

K9 Sam began to bark at the mattress inside the very cluttered room, where it appeared the man attempted to pile items next to the bed in order to better hide from law enforcement officers, the sheriff’s office said. That effort didn’t deter the police dog.

As deputies searched the area where K9 Sam alerted, they found the man under the mattress, according to the release.

All three people taken into custody, but were not publicly identified, were charged with second-degree burglary, the sheriff’s office said. The man found hiding under the mattress also was charged with possession with intent to distribute fentanyl, according to the release.
