Teen from Georgia found dead outside of South Carolina home, officials say

A teenager was killed in a shooting over the weekend, according to the Sumter County Sheriff’s Office.

Jamyah Jones — a 19-year-old from Hampton, Georgia — was the shooting victim, Sumter County Coroner Robbie Baker said Monday.

The teen was unresponsive when found outside a home on Camp Branch Road late Saturday night and later died, according to the sheriff’s office.

At about 11:45 p.m., deputies responded to a call about a shooting on Camp Branch Road, according to the sheriff’s office . When they arrived, deputies found the victim and secured the scene while EMS attempted lifesaving measures, the sheriff’s office said.

The teen was pronounced dead at the scene, according to the coroner’s office.

No other injuries were reported.

Sheriff Anthony Dennis called the shooting “senseless violence” and said investigators are actively working to identify those involved.

Information about the shooter, or shooters, and how many people were involved, was not available, and there was no word on a motive for the gunfire.

No arrests have been reported, but the shooting continues to be investigated by the sheriff’s office and coroner’s office.

There was no word why the teen from Georgia was more than 270 miles from her hometown and found in Sumter, but the coroner’s office said an autopsy will be performed Tuesday at the Medical University of South Carolina in Charleston.

Anyone with information about the deadly shooting is asked to call the sheriff’s office at 803-436-2000, Crime Stoppers at 1-888-CRIME-SC, or submit an online tip.
