Captured suspect shot 2 at Columbia student apartments during fight, sheriff says
A man wanted in connection with a shooting at a student apartment complex has been arrested, according to the Richland County Sheriff’s Department.
Jonathan Bethea, 20, was charged with two counts of attempted murder and possession of a weapon during a violent crime, following a shooting at Redpoint Columbia apartments on Sept. 14, the sheriff’s department announced Friday.
Deputies were notified on Sept. 15 that Bethea had been detained in Horry County after a traffic stop, a news release said.
Around 2:20 a.m., Sunday, Sept. 14, deputies responded to a call about a shooting at 1050 Southern Drive, where they found a victim with gunshot wounds to the upper and lower body.
As they rendered aid to the victim, a second victim approached deputies and said, he too, had been shot, according to an incident report.
Both victims were transported to an area hospital. It’s unclear whether either victim suffered life-threatening wounds.
Investigators determined that Bethea and another individual had been involved in a fight before Bethea pulled out a gun, fired and struck the two victims, who were not involved in the physical alteration, the release said.
Bethea was booked into the Alvin S. Glenn Detention Center upon being extradited from Horry County, and has been denied bond, according to the release.
