Suspect in SC car dealership shooting was shot with own handgun, sheriff says
A suspect has been identified and charged in connection with a shooting at a Columbia car dealership Friday, according to the Richland County Sheriff’s Department.
Joshua Ramdeen, 36, has been charged with pointing and presenting a firearm and first degree assault and battery after confronting two people at McDaniels Volkswagen before being shot by his own handgun, according to a news release.
The Richland County Sheriff’s Department said deputies responded to the dealership at 440 Killian Road at about 11 a.m. Friday in reference to a person being shot. When they got there, deputies located Ramdeen with a gunshot wound to his upper body.
While under the impression Ramdeen was the victim, the responding deputy found the 36-year-old surrounded by employees at the dealership attempting to render aid.
As the deputy assessed the extent of Ramdeen’s injuries, he found an empty holster in the appendix area of Ramdeen’s waistband and a loaded magazine for a firearm in his front right pocket, according to an incident report.
Witnesses at the scene advised that two people, who were conducting business at the dealership were in an altercation with Ramdeen and left the area before deputies arrived, a news release said.
After identifying and making contact with the two people, who knew Ramdeen, investigators determined Ramdeen had confronted one of the two and pulled a gun before the individual, now classified as the victim, fought off Ramdeen and took the firearm. Amid the struggle, the gun discharged and struck Ramdeen.
Ramdeen was transported to an area hospital for treatment and was set to be booked into the Alvin S. Glenn Detention Center once discharged, the news release said.
