SC man dies after being stabbed multiple times by son-in-law, officials say
A South Carolina man who was stabbed by a relative died Tuesday morning in a hospital, according to the Aiken County Coroner’s Office.
Mark D. Burch, a 73-year-old Aiken resident, died from the injuries he suffered in the stabbing, Coroner Darryl Ables said in a news release.
The attack happened Sunday at 1:20 a.m., at the victim’s home in the 500 block of John Scott Road , according to the release.
After being stabbed multiple times, Burch was taken to Wellstar MCG Health hospital in Augusta, Georgia, the coroner’s office said. Burch died at 3:15 a.m. Tuesday, according to the release.
Ables told The State that he would wait for the results of a scheduled autopsy to determine a cause of death. But the Aiken County Sheriff’s Office has arrested a man following the attack where Burch and the 73-year-old’s wife were stabbed, according to the law enforcement agency.
Dale York Carlin III, 50, was charged with murder in the stabbing death of his stepfather, and the attempted murder of his mother, the sheriff’s office said.
At the home, deputies found both victims with multiple stab wounds, according to the sheriff’s office. Carlin also was found at the home and arrested, the sheriff’s office said.
On Sunday, Carlin was originally charged with two counts of attempted murder as well as two counts of possession of a weapon during a violent crime , jail records show. After Burch died, one of the attempted murder charges was upgraded to murder, the sheriff’s office said. No bond has been set for Carlin, who remains behind bars in the Aiken County Detention Center, according to jail records.
Information about a motive for the attack was not available.
Carlin’s mother is still in a hospital, where she’s in stable condition, the sheriff’s office said.
Despite Carlin’s arrest, the attack continues to be investigated by the sheriff’s office and coroner’s office.
