Man is dead and woman in jail after argument turned into shooting, SC police say
A South Carolina man was killed and a woman was arrested following a domestic violence shooting, according to the Sumter Police Department.
Ealicia Samarae Davis, a 22-year-old Sumter resident, was charged with voluntary manslaughter following Thursday night’s shooting, police said in a news release.
At about 6:45 p.m., officers responded to a call about a shooting at Davis’ Coachman Drive home, according to the release.
Davis, who was identified as the shooter, remained at the scene and was taken into custody, police said.
Officers found 25-year-old Bishopville resident Akinyele Rhakem Johnson inside the apartment. The Lee County man appeared to have been shot, Sumter County Coroner Robbie Baker said.
Johnson was taken to Prisma Health Tuomey where he later died, according to police.
No other injuries were reported.
An initial investigation indicates the incident started with an argument that turned physical, police said. The couple’s toddler was in the apartment at the time of the shooting and has been placed with family members, according to police.
Davis was booked at the Sumter County Sheriff’s Office Detention Center, police said. Information on her bond was not available.
Despite Davis’ arrest, the shooting continues to be investigated by police and the coroner’s office. Baker said an autopsy is scheduled to be performed Monday at the Medical University of South Carolina in Charleston.
