SC man was killed and three teens arrested after shooting, Columbia police say
Weeks after a South Carolina man was killed in a shooting, three teenagers were arrested, according to the Columbia Police Department.
The Richland County Coroner’s Office identified 29-year-old Columbia resident Devonte Redmond as the victim in the Oct. 15 shooting, police said in a news release.
On Tuesday, police announced that three 18-year-olds — Mason N. Taylor, Daquan D. Macon and Jalil R. Medlock — have been charged with multiple crimes connected to Redmond’s death.
Taylor, who police said is accused of shooting Redmond, was charged with murder and possession of a weapon during the commission of a violent crime, according to the release.
Macon was charged with misprision of a felony (neglect in reporting a crime) and accessory after the fact to murder, police said. Macon is accused of being present during the shooting and failing to stop Taylor from shooting the victim, in addition to not reporting the crime to police, disposing of the murder weapon and helping Taylor escape the incident location, according to the release.
Medlock also was charged with misprision of a felony for being present during the fatal shooting and failing to stop Taylor, in addition to not reporting the crime, police said.
The shooting happened at the Columbia Garden Apartments at 4000 Plowden Road, according to the release. That’s in a part of Columbia between Shop Road and South Beltline Boulevard, near Jim Hamilton Owens Airport.
Redmond, who was shot in the upper body, was unresponsive when officers found him outside the complex, police said. Officers performed CPR until EMS arrived, and the coroner’s office was then called to the apartment complex, police said.
No other injuries were reported.
There was no word on a motive for the gunfire.
Taylor, Macon and Medlock were booked into the Alvin S. Glenn Detention Center, according to the release. No bond was set for Taylor, while Macon’s was set at $100,000, jail records show. Both remain behind bars, but Medlock is not currently listed on the jail’s inmate roster. Information about his bond was not available.
While Taylor was arrested Oct. 28, Macon was taken into custody Monday, according to jail records. There was no word about when Medlock was booked into the jail. At the time of the shooting, Medlock was out of jail on a $5,000 bond following an Aug. 28 arrest on a second-degree burglary charge, Richland County court records show. That charge is pending.
The South Carolina Law Enforcement Division assisted police in making the arrests.
Despite the arrests, police said that the shooting continues to be investigated by its the Violent Crimes against Persons Unit.
