17-year-old charged as adult with murder after another SC teen was shot, cops say
One teenager is dead and another is locked up in a South Carolina jail following a Tuesday night shooting, according to the Richland County Sheriff’s Department.
Seventeen-year-old Jordan Lemmon was charged with murder, and other crimes, the sheriff’s department said Thursday in a news release. The charges stem from the fatal shooting of a victim, who was identified by the Richland County Coroner’s Office as 18-year-old Columbia resident Dion Briggs.
At about 7 p.m. Tuesday, deputies responded to reports of a shooting in the 1700 block of Nearview Drive, the sheriff’s department said in the release. That’s just west of Percival Road and Interstate 77 in northeast Columbia.
Deputies found Briggs unresponsive in front of a home, according to the release. The teen, who had been shot in the upper body, died at the scene, the sheriff’s department said.
An investigation showed that Briggs was trying to buy a gun from Lemmon, according to the release. During the interaction, Lemmon shot and killed the victim then left the area before deputies arrived, the sheriff’s department said.
Deputies quickly identified Lemmon as the shooter, and he was tracked down in Sumter by members of the sheriff’s department’s Fugitive Task Force as well as the Sumter Police Department, according to the release. Lemmon was taken into custody following a traffic stop, the sheriff’s department said.
Lemmon was taken back to Richland County, where he was booked into the Alvin S. Glenn Detention Center, according to the release. Despite his age, Lemmon was charged as an adult with murder, criminal conspiracy, possession of a weapon during a violent crime and possession of a handgun under 18, the sheriff’s department said.
No bond has been set for Lemmon, who remains behind bars, jail records show.
