SC man has killed two women and is charged in another’s death, officials say

A South Carolina man with a history of killing was recently convicted of murdering his girlfriend, according to the 14th Circuit Solicitor’s Office.

As a trial was scheduled to begin last Monday, 62-year-old Allendale resident Roger Brabham Sr., pleaded guilty to the 2023 shooting death of 58-year-old Patricia Albany, the solicitor’s office said in a news release.

This marks a return to prison for Brabham, who once served time for the death of his first wife, according to the release. In June 1986, Brabham was charged with murder, Allendale County court records show. Later that year he pleaded guilty to a manslaughter charge and was sentenced to 15 years in prison, according to court records.

Information about how Brabham’s first wife was killed was not available.

Brabham was sentenced to 30 years in a South Carolina Department of Corrections prison following Albany’s death, the solicitor’s office said.

In addition to murder, Brabham also pleaded guilty to charges of possession of a weapon during the commission of a violent crime and possession of a firearm by a violent felon, according to the release. Brabham was sentenced to 5-year prison sentences for each of those weapons convictions, but his sentences will be served concurrently, the solicitor’s office said.

He’s currently being held at Kirkland Reception and Evaluation Center in Columbia, prison records show.

“This is effectively a life sentence for a habitually violent offender,” said Hunter Swanson, who prosecuted the case for the 14th Circuit Solicitor’s Office. “This verdict also serves as notice to abusers that they will be held accountable.”

Killing Albany

Albany was killed two days before Christmas 2023, according to the release.

Law enforcement officers were called to Brabham’s mother’s home on Razor Road in Allendale, the solicitor’s office said. Witnesses inside the house said Brabham and Albany were arguing when Brabham threw beer at her, according to the release.

Brabham then retrieved a gun from his car, the solicitor’s office said. When he returned, he shot Albany while she was sitting in a chair, according to the release.

No other injuries were reported in the shooting.

Another female victim

Brabham has been charged with killing another woman in 2023.

In July 2023, the body of 50-year-old Angela K. Blackwell was found by the side of Old Edgefield Road in North Augusta, WRDW reported. Brabham was later arrested on a hit-and-run (with death) charge, court records show.

Brabham’s bond was set at $10,000 and posted on July 24, 2023, the day after he was arrested and five months before Albany was killed, according to court records. That charge is pending.

Help available

For anyone who is a victim of domestic violence, or in need of aid, the solicitor’s office wants victims to know they can reach out for assistance.

“Help is available to anyone who needs it, even if they are not participating in the investigation or prosecution of a crime,” said Michelle Fraser, Director of the solicitor’s office’s Victims Services Center, which provides services for victims of domestic violence, sexual assault, child abuse and other crimes against vulnerable people.

To contact the Victims Services Center, call 843-790-6220, or go online to scsolicitor14.org/victim-services-center.
