For the second time in as many months, a shooting involving a local police officer in Lexington County is under investigation.
The S.C. State Law Enforcement Division, SLED, is investigating an incident in which two people were shot by an officer in Batesburg-Leesville and a second town police officer was struck by a car, SLED announced in a press release on Friday.
The Dec. 10 incident occurred when Batesburg-Leesville police were notified that the Lexington County Sheriff’s Department was searching for two people in a Honda Accord who were suspected of trying to pass counterfeit money at several local liquor stores, the release says.
Police pulled over a vehicle matching the description on West Church Street. The driver attempted to flee the scene, striking one of the officers in the process, according to SLED. The other officer then fired into the vehicle.
Both individuals inside the car were struck and transported to an area hospital. The officer who was hit by the car was treated at the scene by EMS.
This is the second time a Batesburg-Leesville officer has fired their gun in a little more than a month. On Nov. 4, an officer’s gun discharged during a scuffle with a robbery suspect at the Enmarket gas station on West Columbia Avenue. No one was injured in that incident, although SLED reported that the officer was shocked with his own taser in the same fight.
The suspect in that case was apprehended by a second officer at the scene, and the case remains under investigation by SLED.
SLED investigates incidents were police officers fire their guns at the request of local law enforcement agencies so that an outside agency can review the shooting.
This is the 44th officer-involved shooting this year in South Carolina, according to SLED.
