Man shot in barrage of 29 bullets fired in minutes, Richland County sheriff says

A man was shot in South Carolina Saturday, and there’s a search for those who pulled triggers, according to the Richland County Sheriff’s Department.

At about 5:40 p.m., deputies responded to a report of shots fired at an apartment complex in the 500 block of Alcott Drive, the sheriff’s department said in a news release. That’s in a part of Columbia near a stretch of Fairfield Road that’s between North Main Street and I-20.

When deputies arrived they found a man who’d been shot in the lower body, according to the release. The man was taken to an area hospital by EMS, the sheriff’s department said. Further information on his condition was not available.

Sunday at a news conference, Richland County Sheriff Leon Lott said that the victim was a 24-year-old man. Lott said he believes that the victim will survive his injuries.

No other injuries were reported.

Information about the shooter, or shooters, and how many people were involved, was not available. There was no word on a motive for the gunfire.

What is known is that in two barrages of gunfire, separated by minutes, 29 shots were fired, Lott said.

“That’s the amount of bullets and firepower being put out into our community,” Lott said. “It’s the danger of people with guns who just do not care. Just imagine those bullets flying throughout an apartment complex where you have kids and families.”

No arrests have been reported by the sheriff’s department, which is continuing to investigate the shooting. Lott said deputies are closing in on the suspects.

Anyone with information about the shooting is asked to call the sheriff’s department at 803-576-3000, CrimeStoppers at 888-CRIME-SC or submit an online tip.

In the case of an emergency, always call 911.
