Man broke into SC home and killed a person inside, Columbia police say
One man is dead and another is in jail following a weekend shooting in South Carolina, according to the Columbia Police Department.
Michael Hampton II, was charged with murder, possession of a weapon during a violent crime, possession of a weapon by convicted violent felon, first-degree burglary, kidnapping and first-degree assault & battery, police said Sunday night in a news release.
The charges are connected to a break-in and shooting that happened overnight Jan. 2, according to the release.
Just before midnight, officers responded to a shooting at a home in the 200 block of Westwood Avenue, police said. That’s near the Broad River, in a part of Columbia between I-20 and Broad River Road.
Officers found an unresponsive male who had been shot, according to the release. EMS pronounced the victim dead at the scene, police said.
The Richland County Coroner’s Office has not publicly identified the shooting victim.
No other injuries were reported.
Officers learned that Hampton broke into the Westwood Avenue home minutes before the shooting, according to the release. Information about how Hampton was identified as the gunman, as well as when and where he was arrested, was not available.
Police said that they are trying to determine a motive for the shooting, which they said was an isolated incident.
There was no word on any connection between Hampton and the victim.
No bond has been set for Hampton, who remains locked up after being booked into the Alvin S. Glenn Detention Center Jan. 3, jail records show.
