Two females were victims of sex crime, SC police say. Man may have targeted more

A South Carolina man with a lengthy criminal history was recently arrested again, on charges that he exposed himself to two females, including a minor, according to the Columbia Police Department.

And there could be more victims of the man’s suspected sex crimes, police said Saturday in a news release.

Desmond D. Metcalf, 38, was charged with two counts of indecent exposure, according to the release.

On Jan. 9, while in the 1600 block of Willowby Street, Metcalf is accused of exposing himself to two victims, with police saying one of the victims was a juvenile, according to the release. The incident happened near the intersection of Percival Road and Exit 15 on Interstate 77.

Metcalf was booked into the Alvin S. Glenn Detention Center, police said. His bond was set at $15,000 on the combined counts, but Metcalf remains behind bars, jail records show.

He’s scheduled to return to court on March 18, according to Richland County court records. Information about Metcalf’s current attorney was not available, but in the past he’s been represented by Todd Rutherford, Mark Schnee as well as lawyers from the public defender’s office in separate cases, court records show.

Prior to Friday’s arrest, Metcalf had been charged with 11 counts of indecent exposure or a similar sex crime, in the past decade, according to court records. Eight of those charges were dismissed or not prosecuted, court records show.

In 2019, Metcalf pleaded guilty to one count, while two of the other charges are pending from arrests in April 2023 and January 2025, according to court records.

Despite the recent arrest, police are continuing to investigate Metcalf. Anyone else who has been victimized by Metcalf is asked to call police at 803-545-3991.

“An officer will answer your call — please provide detailed information regarding the allegation,” police said in the release.

On Feb. 5, police reported that another woman came forward and said she was a victim of Metcalf’s. He’s been charged with an addition count of indecent exposure, according to police.

In that incident from last summer, Metcalf is accused of being nude at a car wash and in plain view of the victim, police said. The victim recently reported the incident after recognizing Metcalf from news of his other recent arrest, according to police.

Metcalf has previously pleaded guilty to drug and weapons charges, court records show. He’s also pleaded guilty to four counts each of larceny and burglary, according to court records.
