Armed man was talking to deputies when shooting started, South Carolina cops say

A recent shooting involving Orangeburg County Sheriff’s Office deputies and a man armed with a rifle is being investigated by the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division.

Shots were fired following a domestic disturbance, SLED said Wednesday in a news release.

On Sunday, deputies learned about the domestic incident and responded to a Neeses Highway home, according to the release. Specific information about the address and time that deputies went to the home was not available.

Outside the home, deputies encountered a man who was armed with a rifle, SLED said. The armed man was not publicly identified by SLED.

During a conversation between deputies and the armed man, more deputies arrived at the home as backup, and a some point deputies fired at the man, according to the release.

No one was shot or injured, SLED said.

The armed man was taken into custody, according to the release. Information about any charges, and if he remains in custody, was not available.

There was no word about what led deputies to start shooting, or how man fired their weapons.

SLED did not say that the armed man fired his rifle.

The sheriff’s office asked SLED to investigate the shooting. There was no word if the deputies involved in the gunfire were placed on leave or reassigned during the investigation.

This was the sixth time in 2026 that a law enforcement officer in South Carolina has been involved in a shooting, after 45 were reported by SLED last year.

This was the first shooting involving a member of the Orangeburg County Sheriff’s Office in 2026, and the law enforcement agency was involved in one similar incident in 2025, according to the release.
