Deputy hurt in crash and road temporarily closed, Richland County sheriff says
A deputy was injured Tuesday during a chase on a South Carolina road where the patrol vehicle crashed into a utility pole, according to the Richland County Sheriff’s Department.
The single-vehicle collision happened in the Spears Creek Church Road area, the sheriff’s department said in a news release.
At about 12:55 p.m., the deputy was responding to back up another deputy who was pursuing a driver that was evading a traffic stop, according to the release. Information about why the other deputy tried to pull over the vehicle leading chase was not available.
While en route, with emergency lights and sirens activated, a vehicle turned in front of the deputy, the sheriff’s department said. The deputy swerved to avoid the vehicle and crashed into a utility pole, according to the release.

The deputy suffered minor injuries and was treated at an area hospital, according to the release. No other injuries were reported.
The driver leading the chase was stopped, arrested and taken to the Alvin S. Glenn Detention Center, the sheriff’s department said. There was no word about the charges that driver is facing.
The driver of the vehicle that turned in front of the deputy was cited for failure to yield, according to the release.
