Unhappy meal for anyone in South Carolina McDonald’s when customer was shot
A South Carolina man is in jail following a recent shooting inside a McDonald’s restaurant where a man was injured, according to the Lee County Sheriff’s Office.
On Friday, 31-year-old Bishopville resident Dequa Davis was arrested following the shooting at the McDonald’s at 1101 Sumter Highway, the sheriff’s office said in a news release. That’s in a part of Lee County near Exit 116 on I 20.
Davis was charged with attempted murder, possession of a weapon during a violent crime and felon in possession of a firearm, according to the release.
The victim was a customer at the McDonald’s when Davis entered fast food restaurant, the sheriff’s office said. Davis approached the victim, asking for him by name, according to the release.
Davis then pulled out a handgun, and a struggle for the pistol — between him and the victim — followed, the sheriff’s office. During the struggle, the victim was shot, according to the release.
Information about how, or if, the men knew each other prior to the gunfire was not available, and there was no word about a motive for Davis pulling out the gun before the shooting.
The victim was taken by EMS to an area hospital, and was listed in stable condition, the sheriff’s office said. Further information on the victim’s health status was not available.
No other injuries were reported.
Davis left the McDonald’s but surrendered to deputies at the Lee County Sheriff’s Office headquarters shortly after the shooting, according to the release. He was taken to the Sumter County Sheriff’s Office Detention Center, the Lee County Sheriff’s Office said.
No bond has been set for Davis, who is scheduled to return to court on April 15, Lee County judicial records show.
When the McDonald’s shooting occurred, Davis was out on bond from a January 2024 arrest, when he was charged with accessory to the fact after murder, according to court records. Bond was set at $50,000 from that previous arrest and that charge is pending, court records show.
Davis previously pleaded guilty to drug charges in 2018 and 2019, as well as a weapons charge (2018) and failure to stop for a blue light (2022), according to court records. He was charged with murder in 2023, but that count was not prosecuted, court records show.
