Driver refuses to pull over, leads chase on I-77 that ends in crash, SC cops say

Two men were arrested following a Tuesday afternoon chase on a highway running through the Columbia area of South Carolina, according to the Richland County Sheriff’s Department.

At about 1:05 p.m., deputies initiated a traffic stop in the area of Two Notch Road and Roof Street on a vehicle that was driving recklessly, the sheriff’s department said Wednesday in a news release.

The driver, later identified as 26-year-old Cortez Jones, refused to pull over and a pursuit began, according to the release.

The chase lasted about 15 minutes and came to an end when the Jones collided with other vehicles making his vehicle inoperable on I-77, near Ft. Jackson, the sheriff’s department said. That’s more than 7 miles from where the vehicle was first spotted by deputies.

After crashing, both Jones and a passenger in the vehicle, identified as 35-year-old Lorenzo Chandler, tried running away but were caught by deputies and taken into custody, according to the release.

Jones was charged with reckless driving, misuse of tag on vehicle, driving under suspension and failure to stop for blue light and siren, the sheriff’s department said. Chandler was charged with pedestrians prohibited on freeways, according to the release.

Both Jones and Chandler were booked into the Alvin S. Glenn Detention Center, the sheriff’s department said. Chandler was released on a personal recognizance bond, and Jones was released on a $10,000 bond, according to the release.
