22-year-old woman killed in shooting, South Carolina coroner says
Two people were arrested after a woman was killed in a recent shooting, South Carolina officials said.
Ladea Barnes, a 22-year-old Sumter County resident, was identified as the victim who died in Wednesday’s shooting, Sumter County Coroner Robbie Baker said in a news release.
Barnes was one of the acquaintances who had gathered at a home on S.C. 15 South when she was shot, according to the Sumter County Sheriff’s Office.
The shooting happened just before 9:30 p.m., the coroner’s office said.
Deputies responded to the home and attempted to provide aid to Barnes, who died at the scene, according to the sheriff’s office.
No other injuries were reported.
Sumter residents, 26-year-old Shalaya Jermyra Jackson and 25-year-old Gabriel Sentel Jacobs Jr., were arrested, the sheriff’s office said. Jackson was charged with manslaughter, and Jacobs was charged with possession of a handgun by a person convicted of a violent crime, according to the sheriff’s office.
Both were booked into the Sumter County Sheriff’s Office Detention Center, officials said.
Jacobs’ bond was set at $5,000 and was posted Friday, Sumter County court records show. When the shooting occurred, Jacobs was out on bond from a June 2023 arrest when he was charged with larceny/breaking into motor vehicle or tanks, pumps, where fuel, lubricants stored, according to court records. That charge is pending.
In September 2019, Jacobs was arrested and later pleaded guilty to a weapons charge and multiple counts of larceny, court records show.
Jackson’s bond on the involuntary manslaughter charge was set at $50,000 and also was posted Friday, according to court records.
There was no word about a motive for the shooting, which continues to be investigated by the sheriff’s office and coroner’s office. An autopsy has been scheduled for Monday at the Medical University of South Carolina in Charleston, Baker said.
