Man arrested after removing doorbell, SC cops say. Here’s what he tried to hide
A man was arrested after he tried to hit a child with a car and then hide evidence of the crime, according to the Lexington County Sheriff’s Department.
Raheem Smith, 33, was charged with attempted murder and possession of a firearm or ammunition by a person convicted of certain crimes, the sheriff’s department said Friday in a news release.
Information about where and when the incident happened was not available, but jail records show that Smith was arrested April 10.
“Detectives recovered footage from a doorbell camera of Smith trying to run over a child after they got out of Smith’s car,” Lexington County Sheriff Jay Koon said in the release. “The child was able to avoid being hit.”
No injuries were reported, but some property was damaged.
After the victim ran inside, Smith is seen removing the doorbell from the front door in an attempt to obscure evidence of the crime, according to the release.
There was no word about a motive for the crime, or any information about why the child was in Smith’s car.
“Deputies also found Smith to be in possession of a firearm,” Koon said. “He was previously convicted of a felony that carries a maximum penalty of more than one year in prison.”
Smith was booked into the Lexington County Detention Center, according to the release. He remains locked up after bond was denied on both charges, according to jail records.
Smith was previously found guilty of third-degree assault and battery from a 2014 arrest, Lexington County court records show.
In 2012, Smith pleaded guilty to criminal conspiracy and third-degree burglary, according to court records.
