A Georgia man was arrested in connection with an officer-involved shooting that occurred earlier this month in Aiken County, according to the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division.

Anthony Hayes Cantwell, 39, was charged Thursday, May 14, with two counts of first-degree assault and battery, possession of a firearm or ammunition by a person convicted of certain crimes and three counts of pointing and presenting a firearm, according to a news release.

The charges stem from an incident Friday, May 8, on Interstate 20 near mile marker 23, where Cantwell pointed an AR-15 at multiple law enforcement officers, including those from the Aiken County Sheriff’s Office and the South Carolina Highway Patrol, according to arrest warrants.

Cantwell took a shooting stance and raised the long-gun to his shoulder in an aggressive posture toward officers, the warrants said.

He was booked into the Aiken County Detention Center as an investigation into the shooting remains ongoing, according to the release.
