High-ranking sheriff’s deputy had informant buy meth for him to use, SC cops say

A former high-ranking member of a law enforcement agency was recently arrested for using his professional standing to force an informant into buying drugs for him to use, according to the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division.

Mark Grayson Davis was formerly a member of the Greenwood County Sheriff’s Office, SLED said in a news release.

Davis, who was a lieutenant at the sheriff’s office, was arrested Tuesday, according to the release. The 39-year-old Greenwood resident was charged with misconduct in office and distribution of methamphetamine (first offense), SLED said.

The charges stem from April 2, when Davis coerced a confidential informant to buy meth for the law enforcement officer’s personal use, an arrest warrant said.

Davis was in possession of 2 grams of meth, which is evidence of the intent to distribute, according to an arrest warrant.

Davis was booked into the Greenwood County Detention Center, SLED said.

Bond was set at $25,000 on the combined charges and posted Wednesday, Greenwood County court records show. Davis is not currently listed on the jail’s inmate roster.

SLED said it led an investigation at the request of the sheriff’s office.

Davis will be prosecuted by the 8th Circuit Solicitor’s Office.
