Man shoots at officers after car chase ends in Lexington County, sheriff says
A homicide in South Carolina led to a car chase Saturday in the Midlands that ended with a man shooting at deputies and suffering a self-inflicted injury, according to the Lexington County Sheriff’s Department.
Deputies got involved when they saw a vehicle reported to be associated with a homicide in Cayce early Saturday morning, sheriff’s department spokesman Capt Adam Myrick told The State.
Further information about the homicide was not available, and the Cayce Police Department, which is leading that investigation, didn’t immediately respond to questions about the death.
Deputies tried to make a traffic stop, but the driver didn’t pull over and led a pursuit as he continued to drive on U.S. 321, Myrick said.
A deputy performed a precision immobilization technique (a.k.a. PIT) maneuver, on the suspect’s car near the State Farmers Market, according to Myrick. When his car came to a stop, the driver leading the chase fired shots, one of which resulted in a self-inflicted gunshot wound, Myrick said.
Deputies provided first aid to the man, who was taken by EMS to an area hospital for more treatment, according to Myrick. Further information on the man’s condition, and if he’s been released from the hospital then booked into the Lexington County Detention Center was not available.
The man’s name was not publicly announced.
No other injuries were reported from the chase and shooting.
The South Carolina Highway Patrol is investigating the pursuit and the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division is investigating the shooting that followed, Myrick said.
