Fatal shooting led to chase that was followed by another death, SC coroner says

Two men are dead following shootings that were separated by a vehicle chase in South Carolina, according to the Lexington County Coroner’s Office.

Law enforcement officers got involved in the May 23 incident following a deadly shooting early in the morning, the Lexington County Sheriff’s Department said.

At about 4:30 a.m., Zaquan Payden Glover was shot and killed at a home in the 1500 block of Granby Road, Coroner Margaret Fisher said Wednesday in a news release. The 21-year-old West Columbia resident was shot several times in the upper body and died at the scene, according to the release.

That shooting is being investigated by the Cayce Police Department. Further information about that shooting was not available, and police have not responded to messages from The State.

Lexington County deputies became involved Saturday when they saw a vehicle reported to be associated with the homicide in Cayce, the sheriff’s department said.

Deputies tried to make a traffic stop, but the driver — later identified as 26-year-old Lexington resident Aaron Franklin Aycock — didn’t pull over and led a pursuit as he continued to drive on U.S. 321, according to the sheriff’s department.

A deputy performed a precision immobilization technique (a.k.a. PIT) maneuver, on the car near the State Farmers Market, the sheriff’s department said. When the car came to a stop, the driver leading the chase fired shots, one of which resulted in a self-inflicted gunshot wound, according to the sheriff’s department.

Aycock was taken to an area hospital with a gunshot wound to the head, and he died on May 24, the coroner’s office said. An autopsy is scheduled for Thursday at the Medical University of South Carolina in Charleston.

No other injuries were reported from the chase and shooting.

The sheriff’s department did not say if any deputies fired their weapons at Aycock.

The South Carolina Highway Patrol is investigating the pursuit and the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division is investigating the shooting that followed, the sheriff’s department said.
