Nearly a dozen USC frats faced violations this fall. That’s more than all of last year

Nearly a dozen fraternities at the University of South Carolina were cited with violations in fall semester, school records show.

That’s more than double the amount from fall semester 2018, when five student organizations received violations, and spring 2019, where five student organizations were cited with violations.

The violations, 15 in all (some fraternities received multiple violations), were primarily for hazing, noise violations and alcohol. The sanctions against the universities ranged from paying a fine to outright suspension from campus.

Though club sports teams and sororities have been assessed violations in the past, only fraternities received violations during fall semester.

Lambda Chi Alpha, which faced allegations of hazing, alcohol violations and a physical assault, was the only fraternity to be suspended from campus. Lambda Chi was suspended until August 2023. Shortly after news of the suspension broke, USC said it launched an investigation of chapter members for apparently harassing a TV reporter who was covering the story, according to previous articles from The State.

Sigma Nu, Delta Kappa Epsilon, Phi Delta Theta, Theta Chi, Delta Kappa Epsilon, Phi Sigma Kappa and Phi Kappa Tau all were cited with alcohol violations. The chapters were punished by being assessed a fine, given “educational sanctions” or were placed on probation.

Delta Upsilon, Phi Kappa Sigma and Lambda Chi Alpha were sanctioned for noise violations or disruptive events.

Lambda Chi Alpha, Kappa Sigma, Delta Kappa Epsilon and Kappa Alpha Order were sanctioned for hazing allegations, documents show.

All public universities in South Carolina are required to make public the sanctions against Greek Life organizations, according to the Tucker Hipps Transparency Act. Hipps was a pledge at a Clemson University fraternity in 2014 and died after suspected hazing, according to previous articles from The State.
