A man’s day off was set to “stink.” With a planned trip to the landfill to dispose of “junk,” the California man stopped for a drink and lottery tickets on his way.

Donald Simon scratched off the ticket and knew it was a winner, but he underestimated how much the win was worth.

“At first, I thought I’d won two thousand. In fact, when I got home, I told my wife she could have half (if she went and cashed it in),” Simon told California lottery officials. He bought the ticket My Goods Market in Stockton.

However, Simon was wrong about his winnings, according to officials. The $20 ticket won him $2 million.

The winner returned to work the following day and was mocked by his boss for not making money on his day off.

“I showed him on my phone that I actually did make money on my day off,” the winner said. “But he didn’t believe it. He started laughing and said, ‘next time you want to prank someone, prank somebody else!’ ”

Simon said he usually spends his winnings on more lottery tickets, he told officials. He didn’t say he would do that this time.

However, he does plan to continue testing his luck.

“I’m not going to let it slow me down, he said. “I’ve got Scratchers all over my front seat right now.”

Stockton is about a 50-mile drive south from Sacramento.

Many people can gamble or play games of chance without harm. However, for some, gambling is an addiction that can ruin lives and families.
