A Missouri man was shocked to find out he won a huge prize on a scratch-off lottery ticket all because he forgot his lunch at home.

The man got a call from his wife letting him know he forgot his lunch at home, according to a news release from the Missouri Lottery. The man didn’t want to turn back, so he decided to stop at a grocery store in Arnold and buy something to eat. While there, he also bought a lottery ticket.

“I normally don’t play the $30 tickets, but since I had $60 that I had won earlier on some other Scratchers tickets, I thought, ‘Why not?’” he told lottery officials.

He bought a “Millionaire Bucks” Scratchers game and when he scanned the ticket, he realized he won.

“I was completely surprised! I didn’t think I had won,” he said. “Then I saw all the zeros.”

The player hit the jackpot of $3 million. He then called his wife to share the news.

“I like to play jokes,” he said. “It took a little convincing for her to believe me!”

Arnold is about a 20-mile drive southwest of St. Louis and is about 30 miles from Belleville, Illinois.
