As the lucky lottery player scratched off his ticket, he became overwhelmed with emotion, realizing it was a big winner, lottery officials said.

Jose Marquina told the Virginia Lottery he “nearly cried” when he won $500,000 off a Cash Fever ticket, according to a Nov. 4 news release.

“I couldn’t keep playing anymore,” he said in the release. “I gave the ticket to my wife and asked her to finish scratching the ticket for me!”

Marquina said his wife took the ticket and confirmed the win. Now, they plan to use the earnings to buy a house, he said.

“I’m so happy! I nearly cried,” Marquina said. “It’s my day today!”

According to lottery officials, Marquina is the first of three top prize winners for the Cash Fever game. He bought his ticket at a Euro Market Mobil in Falls Church, about a 4-mile drive west from Arlington.

The odds of winning a top prize in Cash Fever are 1 in 612,000, and the odds of winning any cash prize — which ranges from $20 to $500,000 — are 1 in 5.9, the lottery said.

Many people can gamble or play games of chance without harm. However, for some, gambling is an addiction that can ruin lives and families.

If you or a loved one shows signs of gambling addiction, you can seek help by calling the national gambling hotline at 1-800-522-4700 or visiting the National Council on Problem Gambling website.
