An Illinois woman was shocked when she remembered to check a lottery ticket and saw how much she won.

The woman went to buy groceries at a store in Elmhurst, according to a Nov. 5 news release from the Illinois Lottery. While at the store, she decided to pick up a lottery ticket.

“While on my way to visit my Aunt, I made a quick stop at Jewel to pick up a few groceries, and before heading out the door, I grabbed a quick pick Lucky Day Lotto ticket,” the woman told lottery officials.

After buying the ticket, she said she put it in her purse and “forgot all about it.”

“A couple days after the drawing, I saw the ticket in my purse and opened my lottery app to scan my ticket and check if it was a winner. I immediately saw ‘$1,000,000’ on the screen and I was in total shock,” she said.

The woman said she scanned the ticket again to be sure.

“When it showed ‘$1,000,000’ again, I instantly started crying. I thought, ‘This is unbelievable,’” the woman said.

The woman said she plans to take yearly trips to Ireland, her “favorite place in the whole world.”

“The landscape is stunning and I’m thrilled that I can now look forward to these trips every year,” she said.

Elmhurst is about a 20-mile drive west of Chicago.
