A Maryland woman often plays lottery games with her best friend.

If they win, the women text one another photos of their winning tickets to confirm, Maryland Lottery officials said in a Nov. 12 news release.

The women also frequently visit the lottery website and fantasize of winning.

“Why can’t that be us?” the women often think while glancing over the winners, they told lottery officials.

Then, this month, “their dreams came true” when the woman took a trip to a Germantown grocery store, lottery officials said.

She cashed a winning Pick 4 ticket worth $100 and used it to buy more tickets, lottery officials said.

“There were only two of the Holiday Luck Doubler in the machine,” the woman told lottery officials.

So, she bought both of the $5 scratch-off tickets, lottery officials said.

When the woman scratched the second ticket, she knew it was a winner “right away” after seeing she matched a winning number, she said.

The woman no longer had to “fantasize about winning a big check.” She won a top prize of $50,000, according to lottery officials.

Right away, the woman texted a photo of her winning ticket to her best friend.

“When I saw that text, I screamed and called her right away,” the friend told lottery officials.

The woman, too, was overly excited by her win “and was shaking so much she could not drive.”

She told lottery officials she plans to use her winnings “to help family members financially,” as well as to pay bills.

The Holiday Luck Doubler scratch-off debuted in October with six $50,000 top prizes, lottery officials said.

With this win, there are five remaining top prizes, lottery officials said, adding that there are also 17 unclaimed prizes of $5,000.

Germantown is about a 50-mile drive southwest from Baltimore.

Many people can gamble or play games of chance without harm. However, for some, gambling is an addiction that can ruin lives and families.

If you or a loved one shows signs of gambling addiction, you can seek help by calling the national gambling hotline at 1-800-522-4700 or visiting the National Council on Problem Gambling website.
