When a Maryland woman had a serendipitous moment while sitting in traffic, she took it “as a sign of good fortune.”

The woman was idling in traffic when a license plate caught her eye, Maryland Lottery officials said in a Jan. 23 news release.

The license plate number included her late father’s birthday, lottery officials said.

Thinking it was a sign, the woman told lottery officials she stopped by a Lutherville gas station to buy a “Pick 5 ticket using those special numbers.”

She placed a $1 straight bet for the Nov. 1 evening drawing, lottery officials said.

Then, “weeks later,” the woman scanned her ticket while she was with her sister, lottery officials said.

“To her amazement,” she won $50,000.

The “stunned” woman celebrated with her sister, then rushed home to share the news with her family, lottery officials said.

The woman told lottery officials she plans to use some of her winnings toward a home renovation and save the rest for her children’s future.

Though she already has a big win in the books, the woman told lottery officials she plans to try her luck again.

“Hopefully, I’ll win again — God willing, for even more — but either way, I’m blessed,” she told lottery officials.

Lutherville is about a 15-mile drive north from Baltimore.
