Incumbent Lexington County coroner Margaret Fisher cruised to re-election Tuesday.

Republican Fisher won in a runaway, defeating Frank Barron for the second time in two years.

“We try so hard in the job and I’m thankful to voters for recognizing that,” she said. “I promise we won’t let anybody down.”

The loss was the latest setback for Barron, who has tried repeatedly to revive his political career after 22 years as coroner in adjoining Richland County.

Barron’s bid was a long-shot in a match that was the only contest for countywide office on the ballot.

He was the nominee of the tiny Constitution Party in a county that’s a Republican stronghold, with law enforcement leaders as well as Barron’s successor in Richland County backing Fisher.

The contest ended in an exchange of barbs between Fisher and Barron over personal style after a quiet start.

Fisher became the county’s first new coroner in 37 years in 2014.
