First debate between SC’s Joe Wilson and Adair Ford Boroughs scheduled

U.S. Rep. Joe Wilson and Democratic opponent Adair Ford Boroughs will go head to head during their first debate on October 20.

The debate — hosted by Lexington County School District One’s Center for Law and Global Policy, the Post and Courier, WIS News 10 and the Center for Media Arts, Design and Production — will take place at River Bluff High School at 7 p.m, according to a statement from the Lexington One district.

The event will not be open to a live audience.

Students will take an active roll in the debate. WIS Anchor Judi Gatson and (Charleston) Post and Courier Reporter Avery Wilks will moderate the debate, and students from Lexington One’s Center for Law and Global Policy will ask candidates questions.

Student’s at Lexington One’s Center for Media Arts, Design and Production will work with WIS to broadcast the debate on WIS’s station and on social media.

In early September, Boroughs, a former U.S. Department of Justice attorney, challenged Wilson to three debates and one televised town hall. The debate hosted by Lexington One was the first debate featuring the pair to be scheduled.

Both Boroughs and Wilson are running in the 2nd Congressional District, which includes parts of Lexington, Aiken, Barnwell and Orangeburg counties. It also includes parts of Richland County, including Forrest Acres, Rosewood and the areas near Fort Jackson.

Boroughs has proven to be Wilson’s most competitive challenger in years, raising more money than him in every quarter since late 2019. Still, it will be an uphill challenge to defeat Wilson, who is seeking his 10th term since taking office in 2001.
