Former congressional candidate to start law firm focused on making SC ‘a better place’
Former U.S. House Democratic candidate Adair Ford Boroughs plans to reenter the South Carolina political scene, but not as a candidate this time.
On Thursday, Boroughs and attorney Chris Bryant will launch a new law firm focused on providing more affordable representation to political candidates, advocacy groups, small businesses and nonprofits in the Palmetto State.
“This is our next step to try to make South Carolina a better place,” Boroughs told The State Monday.
Bryant teased the opening of firm Boroughs Bryant on Twitter Monday.
“Excited to unveil what @AdairFromSC and I have been working on for the last month or so (although you could say it’s been in the works since we met in 2015). Full firm launch and website rollout on Thursday!” Bryant tweeted.
Businesses and nonprofits who are working to improve South Carolina are encouraged to seek out their legal representation, Boroughs said. The firm hopes to attract clients who can’t afford to employ expensive law firms that do similar work.
Already, the firm has lined up some clients, though Boroughs could not disclose who they will be due to lawyer-client confidentiality.
“There’s so many small businesses that cant afford the Nelson Mullins, Nexsen Pruet big rates and such,” Boroughs said, referring to two large, well-connected South Carolina-based firms.
Boroughs and Bryant have a history of working to provide affordable legal work in South Carolina.
Both worked in leadership positions at Charleston Legal Access, a nonprofit that helps provide legal representation to people who don’t qualify for a public defender but can’t afford an expensive defense attorney.
Last year, Boroughs ran an unsuccessful congressional campaign against Republican U.S. Rep. Joe Wilson for South Carolina’s 2nd Congressional District. Though she lost, Boroughs gave Wilson arguably his toughest challenge in the last decade, setting fundraising records.
