First lady Jill Biden headed back to SC, this time to Charleston
First lady Jill Biden will make her second South Carolina trip in roughly a week, visiting the Charleston area Sunday, the White House announced.
Biden will visit Charleston Sunday and leave Monday night, the White House said.
Biden is scheduled to arrive at Joint Base Charleston about 9:45 p.m. Sunday. On Monday, she will visit the Medical University of South Carolina’s Hollings Cancer Center in honor of Breast Cancer Awareness Month.
Later, she’ll host an event at Joint Base Charleston for military families before returning to Washington.
Biden isn’t the first first lady in recent history to visit Joint Base Charleston. In 2019, Melania Trump and second lady Karen Pence met with active duty military members to hear from emergency response teams. Trump also gave a speech thanking the troops and their families for their service.
This is Biden’s second scheduled trip to South Carolina in the last week.
Last Sunday, the first lady visited West Columbia to speak at the 50th work anniversary of the Rev. Dr. Charles Jackson at Brookland Baptist Church.
There, Biden spoke about her faith, something she said she wasn’t typically public about.
She said she felt a crisis of faith after her son Beau Biden died of cancer in 2015, and was approached by Robin Jackson, the “first lady” of Brookland Baptist Church, during a 2019 campaign stop at the West Columbia facility. Jackson asked to be Biden’s “prayer partner” and the two have been close since.
The West Columbia stop marked Biden’s first return back to South Carolina since the 2020 Democratic primary.
