Steve Spurrier, USC Heisman winner George Rogers to headline SC event for Republican AG

Football fans may spot some familiar, and famous, faces around Williams-Brice Stadium this weekend as some football legendswith South Carolina ties come to Columbia for a political fundraiser.

Former University of South Carolina football head coach Steve Spurrier, former Virginia Tech coach Frank Beamer, USC Heisman Trophy winner George Rogers and Heisman winner Danny Wuerffel are scheduled to attend a fundraiser for state Attorney General Alan Wilson.

The fundraiser, Wilson’s annual tailgate, will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. Friday at the River Rat Brewery off of Shop Road near the stadium, according to an invitation for the fundraiser.

Wilson’s fundraiser comes the day before the Gamecocks are set to take on the Florida Gators, setting up an interesting dynamic between the attorney general’s former football playing guests.

Wuerffel won his Heisman Trophy in 1996 while playing quarterback at Florida. Rogers won his in 1980. Spurrier, who coached USC from 2005 to 2015 previously coached Florida from 1990 to 2001.

Beamer’s son, Shane, is the current coach of the Gamecocks.

Wilson, a Republican, is preparing to run for reelection in 2022. So far, Wilson is the only candidate fundraising for the race.
