Former South Carolina Treasurer Thomas Ravenel, who resigned after he was charged with cocaine possession with intent to distribute, is making a run for governor.

Ravenel, who says he’s a libertarian on his X profile, announced his candidacy via social media.

It is unclear if the former treasurer, who was elected as a Republican, will jump into the GOP primary. He ran for the U.S. Senate in 2014 as an independent. Ravenel was sentenced to 10 months for the federal drug charge and fined $221,000.

“I’m running for Governor of South Carolina and none of the lightweights currently in the race are going to stop me,” Ravenel posted on X. “I have a message that’s going to change not just South Carolina but the entire country.”

Ravenel, who was a reality television personality on Bravo’s Southern Charm from 2014-2018, jumps into a race that is expected to include Lt. Gov. Pamela Evette, U.S. Rep. Nancy Mace and Attorney General Alan Wilson.

State Sens. Sean Bennett and Josh Kimbrell also have been considered as possible candidates.
