This SC humane society is running out of time and money before it’s forced to close
A South Carolina shelter is racing against the clock before it’s forced to permanently close its doors.
The Pickens County Humane Society announced earlier this year that it was in need of finding forever homes for dozens of animals, before it was forced to shutdown. The organization’s director, Samantha Gamble, said the shelter had “ran out of time” and had not “made enough stride in making up a significant deficit.”
At the time, Gamble told the Independent Mail that the humane society had struggled to make ends meet since the county opened its own shelter, pulling $70,000 of annual funding from the human society. She said she was unable to make up the shortfall through a series of fundraisers.
But the Pickens County Humane Society is now much closer to meeting its fundraising goal to save the shelter, with fewer than three weeks left in 2017, than it was when it first announced in October it would have to close.
By Nov. 28, Gamble announced on the organization’s GoFundMe page that they were at 62 percent of their goal. On Tuesday, it was 87 percent. Now, they’re counting on a “Christmas Miracle” to reach their goal.
“As a no-kill shelter we silently cry for all those who will have to go elsewhere, or nowhere at all, if our doors close on December 31st,” Gamble wrote. “We have hope that won’t happen. We have you, who through your support will continue to challenge others to step up and give, if not today, before December 31st to Save the Shelter – Save the Animals!”
