Crying baby found in trash can beside church, NC cops say. The mom has been arrested
The mother of a newborn baby that police say was found in a trash can outside a North Carolina church has been arrested.
A woman walking her dog Thursday evening reportedly heard the baby’s cries coming from a trash can near the Christ Community Church in Wilmington and discovered the boy inside, McClatchy News previously reported.
The baby was inside a tied black trash bag, and his umbilical cord was still attached and wrapped around his neck, media outlets reported.
The woman called 911 and the baby was taken to a hospital, where police say he was “healthy and doing well” as of Thursday evening.
Now the woman who Wilmington Police say is the mother, 21-year-old Maryuri Estefany Calix-Macedo, has been arrested, according to a Saturday release.
She has been charged with first-degree attempted murder, the release says.
Calix-Macedo was taken to New Hanover Regional Medical Center “for assessment” and is now being held at the county jail under a $800,000 bond.
Officials are still investigating the case, police say, and ask that anyone with information call Detective H.M. Wooddell with the Wilmington Police Department at (910)-341-0166.
