Teen among five killed when SUV runs stop sign and slams into 18-wheeler, NC cops say
Five people, including a teenager, are dead after an SUV ran a stop sign in North Carolina, state troopers say, according to news outlets.
State Highway Patrol said the SUV’s driver failed to stop at a stop sign near Hayfield Road and U.S. Highway 13 in Cumberland County and slammed into an 18-wheeler around 3 p.m. on Sunday, March 5, according to WTVD.
All five passengers in the SUV were thrown from the car, which caught fire after the wreck, troopers told WNCN. Four passengers died at the scene.
The fifth passenger, a teenager, was airlifted with third-degree burns, the outlet said. The teenager died at a hospital.
The collision caused the tractor-trailer to go off the road and flip, troopers said, according to WTVD. The driver was hospitalized with minor injuries.
Neighbors near the crash said the wreck sounded like a bomb exploding, WRAL reported.
North Carolina State Highway Patrol did not immediately return McClatchy News’ request for comment on March 6.
Cumberland County is about 70 miles south of Raleigh.
