13 people killed on South Carolina highways over Thanksgiving holiday, state says

Thirteen people died on South Carolina’s highways during the busy Thanksgiving holiday between Nov. 27 and Dec. 1, according to reports from the S.C. Highway Patrol.

The crashes happened all over the state, and the fatalities included four pedestrians. The deadliest crash happened at about 1:30 a.m. on Black Friday when two pedestrians died on Interstate 20.

The Highway Patrol reported 12 fatalities on South Carolina highways during the Thanksgiving travel period last year.

Here are the crashes, according to Highway Patrol press releases, unless otherwise noted:

Nov. 27

Orangeburg County: A car hit a pedestrian in the road at about 8:20 p.m. No charges are expected.

Nov. 28

Dorchester County: A pickup truck ran off the road, hitting a utility pole and a parked car at about 7:45 a.m. The driver died.

Richland County: An SUV ran off the road and overturned, killing the driver at about 3:30 a.m. The driver was not wearing a seat belt.

Oconee County: A 44-year-old man was struck by a vehicle and died from his injuries two days later at Greenville Memorial Hospital, according to the Oconee County coroner. A 911 caller reported the incident at about 8:25 p.m.

Berkeley County: A car ran off the road and struck a ditch at about 10 p.m. The driver was not wearing a seat belt and died in the crash.

Nov. 29

Chesterfield County: A driver was killed after failing to stop at a stop sign at about 3:15 p.m. and being hit by another vehicle. The driver was not wearing a seat belt.

Berkeley County: One person died in a crash on involving a car and a tractor trailer on I-26 eastbound at 11 a.m.

Orangeburg County: The driver of a car died when he went off the road, struck a tree and his car caught on fire at about 4:17 a.m.

Kershaw County: Two cars hit two pedestrians in the road, killing both, on eastbound I-20 at about 1:30 a.m.

Nov. 30

York County: A driver was not wearing a seat belt and went off the road before the car flipped at about 7:40 p.m.

Horry County: A car hit and killed a pedestrian at about 6 p.m. on Highway 17 near Little River. No charges were filed.

Dec. 1

Laurens County: A driver was not wearing a seat belt when he went off the road at about 4 a.m.

Clarendon County: An SUV ran off the road into a ditch and hit a tree at about 12:35 a.m. The person who died was not wearing a seat belt.
