20-year-old trying to defend his mom is shot and killed, South Carolina police say
A 20-year-old was shot to death while he tried to protect his mom, South Carolina officials say.
Landis O’Neal Osbey was killed during a “domestic dispute” involving his mother and her boyfriend, the Anderson Police Department told the Independent Mail and other media outlets.
Officials say it happened early Monday at a house in Anderson, a city roughly 30 miles southwest of Greenville and near the Georgia border.
Osbey “tried to break up a fight between his mother and her boyfriend when he was shot in the chest,” the Anderson County Coroner’s Office told WSPA.
Police say four people, including a child, saw the shooter fire at his girlfriend’s son, according to WHNS.
Emergency responders tried to revive the son, but he died at the scene, the station and other outlets report.
The mom’s boyfriend, Rashard Mandrell Smith, was arrested Monday and charged with murder and weapon possession, Anderson County jail records show. The 40-year-old was denied bond.
Officials were still investigating the death as of Monday, according to WSPA.
