Stepdad chases stranger who walked into home at 2 a.m. and snatched girl, SC cops say

A 7-year-old girl was taken from her South Carolina home by a stranger in the dead of the night, police say.

The man, who hasn’t been identified, walked into the home in North Charleston through a door left unlocked around 2 a.m. Sunday, according to the Charleston County Sheriff’s Office.

He took the girl from the home and started running off with her, the Sheriff’s Office says.

But the girl’s stepdad heard her screaming and chased after the man, who was carrying the 7-year-old, across the yard, according to the Sheriff’s Office.

The man eventually dropped the child and ran off, the Sheriff’s Office says.

Deputies and North Charleston police officers searched the area along with police dogs but weren’t able to find the man, who is described as short and wearing dark clothes, the Sheriff’s Office says.

Officials are investigating and have “increased patrols” in the area, the Sheriff’s Office says. Anyone with information should call the Sheriff’s Office at 843-202-1700 or Crime Stoppers of the Lowcountry at 843-554-1111.
