Woman is killed while trying to help an injured deer, South Carolina officials say

A South Carolina woman died Sunday after being hit by a car while helping an injured deer, media outlets report.

Andrea Owens, 39, and her husband were on their way home around 1 a.m. Sunday when officials say they came across an injured deer that had been hit by a car on Due West Road in Anderson, WYFF reports.

As she was helping the deer on the side of the road, she was hit by a car, officials told FOX Carolina.

Owens was airlifted to Greenville Memorial Hospital, which is about 27 miles from Anderson. She died during surgery at the hospital, WSPA reports.

The Anderson County coroner is investigating along with state Highway Patrol, WYFF reports.

Officials say Owens was from Honea Path, according to WSPA.

No other information, including the name of the driver, has been released.
