Inmate at Tyger River Correctional Institution has died due to COVID-19, SCDC says

An inmate at the Tyger River Correctional Institution has died due to COVID-19, the South Carolina Department of Corrections said Friday.

This marks the third inmate in the state correctional system to die as a result of the virus.

Stanley Smith, 58, had been hospitalized since June 26, after testing positive for coronavirus two days prior.

Smith had underlying medical conditions, the department said in a release. He died in an outside hospital Friday.

Convicted in Spartanburg County court in 2011, Smith was serving sentences for kidnapping and criminal sexual conduct in the first degree, department records show. He was expected to be released next year.

At the facility, 116 inmates and nine staff have tested positive for the virus, according to SCDC. Statewide, 313 inmates have been infected: 105 of those have recovered, and 208 are still sick.

“Most of the living units at the institution are on quarantine or isolation,” the department said.
