A puppy left outside an animal control building on a frigid night later died, South Carolina officials said.

Video shows someone pulling up to the building in a car and bringing an animal pen to its doorstep on Jan. 4, according to the Orangeburg County Sheriff’s Office.

“This little puppy was left with no blankets or bedding to keep warm,” Sheriff Leroy Ravenell wrote in a Facebook post. “We’d certainly like to speak with this individual about their actions.”

Officials said it happened outside Orangeburg County Animal Control, roughly 40 miles south of Columbia.

The dog was dropped off at about 3 a.m. on a day when temperatures in the area plunged into the 30s, according to the National Weather Service. A maintenance team found the puppy dead later that day, officials said.

When it gets cold, pet owners are encouraged to keep small and short-haired dogs bundled up outdoors.

“Keep the older dogs and the puppies indoors as much as possible,” the American Kennel Club said on its website.

Deputies urge anyone with information to call Lt. Steven Thompson at 803-534-3550 or Crimestoppers at 888-274-6372.
