More snow, below freezing weather possible for SC soon. Here’s when, how much & how cold
Parts of South Carolina may soon be due another bout of snow, less than two weeks after being blasted by wintry weather.
According to the National Weather Service and the Weather Channel, there is a high likelihood of a cold air mass settling over the state by Monday, which may generate some of the coldest temperatures so far this season.
The NWS says there could also be winter weather, but is less confident.
“There remains much uncertainty with any potential storm track and timing of the system at this time but with the highly confident cold air mass in place, there is potential for winter weather to occur,” the NWS wrote in a Wednesday evening weather update.
Meanwhile, the Weather Channel predicts snow will fall over parts of South Carolina — possibly more than what the state got less than two weeks ago.
Note that all weather forecasts are subject to change throughout the week.
SC snow chances
Midlands
As of Wednesday evening, the Weather Channel predicted snow chances on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday for the Midlands.
For Monday, the Weather Channel predicts a low about 6% chance of snow for that evening, but no accumulation. By Tuesday, the chances skyrocket to the mid- 40% range, with possible accumulation of about an inch. The chance of snowfall on Wednesday drops to around 35%, however, the forecast calls for accumulation of between 1 and 3 inches.
Upstate
Residents living in the Upstate should expect less potential snow accumulation next week.
The Weather Channel predicts around a 7% chance of snow with no accumulation for Monday evening. Snow chances of around 35% with accumulation of less than 1 inch are possible on Tuesday. No snow is expected for Wednesday.
Pee Dee Region and Lowcountry
Both the Pee Dee and Lowcountry could see noticeable snowfall next week, if the Wednesday evening forecast holds up.
For instance, the NWS predicts a 30% chance of snow for Myrtle Beach on Tuesday and a 30% chance of snow and sleet on Wednesday. The Weather Channel forecasts between 1 and 5 inches of snowfall Tuesday through Wednesday.
Down around Charleston, the NWS is calling for a 50% chance of snow on Tuesday, followed by a 40% of rain and snow on Wednesday. Between 1 and 3 inches of snowfall could be possible, The Weather Channel states.
Freezing temperatures
South Carolina faces below average temperatures basically all of next week, forecasts show.
“Temperatures 15-20 degrees below average expected Monday onward, so not quite record breaking but very cold, even for January,” NWS states.
Most of South Carolina can expect highs in the mid 30s and lows in the low 20s the first half of next week. Highs will rise into the 40s Thursday through Saturday, while lows will stick to the 30s.
